Abstract

On sentence member status of the forms like pět

A Note on the concept of syntactic dependency

The main goal of the paper is to show how it would be possible to explain (very clearly) the concept of syntactic dependency to the students and to demonstrate convincingly that in syntagmas like pět písniček ʻfive songsʼ the numeral is undoubtedly a syntactically dependent member, and also that the often declared discrepancy between meaning and form (in these syntagmas) is only illusory. The paper is to a great extent linguodidactic in nature, however, the author also offers some observations that could be of interest even to syntax theorists.
