Abstract
This introduction to the special section of Linguistic Frontiers ‘Semiotics and Participation’ explores the intersection between semiotics and participation sciences across contemporary social and epistemic contexts. Addressing a central paradox –that semiotics remains as a marginal endeavour despite engaging with meaning-making processes central to contemporary practices, the collection reframes the question of semiotic engagement: not how semiotics can speak about participation, but how it can work with it as a methodological and theoretical condition.
Five articles examine participation across heterogeneous fields: as a methodological condition for semiotics (Badir); as an analytical operator reconfiguring perception in virtual reality (Fabre, Giraud); as a discursive practice in urban human-plant relations (Cholet, Lloveria); as an affective transmission structure reactivating subaltern memories (Pastorini); and as a pedagogical horizon for democratising semiotic competence through popular education (Berthomé).
Rather than unifying participation under a single definition, this special section of LF observes how it manifests across methodologies, contributing to reflections on ‘ecologies of meaning’ amid ecological, technological, and social transformations.
