The so-called free dative (syntactically independent case) in school teaching is the topic of our paper. We form two basic groups of free dative forms, i. e. on the one hand expressions that are sentence elements and by their nature act as different kind of adverbials and on the other hand dative forms that are not sentence elements but are used as contact expressions and stylistic markers.
