We compare the prosaic works Totožnost by Milan Kundera (L’Identité, translated by Anna Kareninová, published in Czech in 2024, Brno, Atlantis) and Uvidíme se v srpnu by Gabriel Gárcia Márquez (En agosto nos vemos, translated by Blanka Stárková, published in Czech in 2024, Praha, Odeon). We start with the information on the circulation of the texts (posthumous publication, translations, reception) and proceed to the context of contemporary Czech literature within which the texts belong. Concluding sections outline shared features of both works that can be identified upon reading and analysis, for example topic, motifs (desire, woman in her middle age, setting off for a journey) or structure. Reception horizon of the reader and specific role of educational context are also being taken into consideration.
